Synopsis:
On The Edge of Light and Shadow looks into violence and human nature with the stories of an actress, who has devoted her life to humanizing the penal system, the rap duo 509-E with Dexter and Afro-X, inside the extinct Carandiru, at that time the largest prison in Latin America, and a judge who believes in a more dignified way to rehabilitate inmates. The documentary follows the life of these characters throughout seven years, beginning in the year 2000.
Luciana Burlamaqui Bio:
Luciana Burlamaqui, 40 years old, documentary director, camerawoman and producer. Has a degree in Journalism from Pontifícia Universidade Católica in São Paulo – Brazil (92). Specialized in covering social issues. Has worked as a press reporter in Brazil and also as international correspondent in New York for Agência Estado and for Jornal do Brasil. Acted as a TV show reporter for several TV stations in Brazil. Has worked as camera, editor and director for Downtown Community Television Center in New York where she lived for 4 years. She also worked for PBS/Channel 13 as Production Coordinator and Associate Producer of several educational videos, and for the last 10 years has been collaborating as producer of documentaries about social inequalities in Brazil produced by the English company Television Trust for the Environment, broadcasted by BBC World and for the French Article Z broadcasted by TV ARTE (France). Has established her own production company – Zora Mídia – in 2003 aiming to produce and co-produce documentaries and feature films that have to do with humanist issues.
