The Master and Divino

Brazil, documentary, 2013, 85min. Dir: Tiago Campos. A Vídeo nas Aldeias production. Japan Premiere!

Synopsis & UPAF Memo:

The Master and Divino2 HeideTwo filmmakers portray life in the village and mission of Sangradouro, Mato Grosso: Adalbert Heide, an eccentric German missionary, who soon after contact with the Indians in 1957, starts to film with his Super-8 camera; and Divino Tserewahu, a young Xavante filmmaker, who’s been producing films for television and cinema festivals since the 90s. Shifting between complicity, competition, irony and affection, they give life to their historical records, revealing what’s behind-the-scenes of indigenous conversion in Brazil.

What makes this film so unique is that there is a third filmmaker -Tiago, who observes the relationship between the two as a filmmaker from the city who taught Divino how to make films. It is a story of three men who make films, each for totally different reasons.

Viewing notes for young audiences: There are no violence or sexual scenes in this film. Recommended for all ages as long as they can read subtitles. In Portuguese with English and Japanese subtitles.
